Japanese Culture (Food)

Hello from San Antonio, Texas. This is Ai.

I have been living in the United States for seven years, and I enjoy living here very much.
However, I miss Japan at the same time.
I miss the food, culture, and people…basically, I miss everything.
Since I got the chance to write a blog on Mamasan&Company’s global page,
I decided to write about Japan, aiming to increase the number of international viewers.
I will share some of my favorite Japanese foods with you, and I hope you will be interested.

Udon is one of the most popular noodles in Japan.
Udon is a wheat flour soup noodle, and the broth is typically made from fish and seaweed.
While the taste might be little subtle compared to ramen, it is flavorful and savory.
We often add Shichimi (7 spice blend) to udon to give a little kick,
and tempura goes well with udon too.
In fact, I have a strong craving for udon occasionally, especially in winter.

I like green tea desserts of any kind, but I love green tea parfait the most.
I like the harmony of the bitterness of green tea and the sweetness of other ingredients, such as cream, cake, and mochi.
People who are not good at sweets, like me, probably will also be able to enjoy green tea desserts.
When summer comes, many café restaurants start serving green tea parfaits, which I am looking forward to right now.

Takoyaki is a kind of Teppanyaki (Iron Griddle Cooking), but its shape is like a ball.
It is made of flour batter and octopus.
Takoyaki literally means octopus (Tako) fry (Yaki).
Also, we can substitute octopus with other ingredients, such as cheese and sausage, according to our preference.
I have a Takoyaki pan, so I make Takoyaki on special occasions, especially for a home party.
(which in Japan we call a “takopa” for Takoyaki party).
Making Takoyaki requires some technique because of its shape,
but cooking it with friends always makes the experience more fun and enjoyable.
